Countdown to the first 100% Design South Africa

The renowned international design exhibition 100% Design is launching on the African continent for the first time in August during a dynamic year that has seen Cape Town host The World Design Capital and the international design programme Design Network Africa winning the inaugural African Design Award in Gabon.

100% Design South Africa is an international showcase for contemporary design with a unique African perspective. It will be held in Johannesburg (6-10 August in Hall 1, Gallagher Convention Centre), running alongside the well-established and largest home show on the continent, Decorex SA, which last year saw just over 54, 000 people through the doors. Exhibition Director Cairey Baxter-Bruce, explains why the exhibition is coming to South Africa, '100% Design started in London and has become the leading go-to exhibition for forward-thinking design. Following exhibitions in Tokyo and Singapore it was felt that the time was right to open on the African continent and South Africa – the gateway for business throughout the continent - is the prime place to host this event'

Africa Arising
There is a burgeoning design scene in Africa with emerging designers entering the global design arena to offer a fresh approach to the creative process. Equally design awareness is taking off across the continent in tune with the booming economies of the Sub-Saharan countries and with it a hunger for design-lead products. In turn South Africa is where Africa does design business with many of the countries architects, specifiers, designers and interior designers working or sourcing from here. And Cape Town has been playing host to the World Design Capital 2014 with over 300 accredited design projects (including 100% Design South Africa) being established in the course of the year.

'The continent is at a very dynamic moment in design and is set to become a place to watch in the coming years. Africa designers are totally conscious of the bigger design world and are beginning to be confident in offering their take. There is a creative restlessness here - people are tapping into the rich design resources and references South Africa has in droves and adapting them to urban contemporary living.' says 100% Design South Africa, Programmes Director: Cathy O'Clery.
