M-Days 2014 in Frankfurt am Main
In Germany, almost one in two customers transact their banking business online and over 50 percent of this group check their account at least once a week using a PC or smartphone. These are the results of a poll conducted by the Association of German Banks (Bundesverband deutscher Banken) in 2013. Moreover, 85 percent of smartphone users prefer to make payments via an app from their bank. The second most popular providers are payment-card brands, accounting for 75 percent. These figures are to be found in an accenture study entitled 'Mobile Web Watch 2013: The New Persuaders'.
The 9th M-Days – Specialised Exhibition with Integrated Conference for the Mobile Business – in Frankfurt am Main on 13 and 14 May 2014 provides a platform for developments and trends in mobile banking within the framework of the Mobile Enterprise product segment. "Naturally, mobile banking is a must on the agenda of M‑Days in Germany's banking capital. Therefore, in cooperation with the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, Messe Frankfurt is holding two events spotlighting this subject at M-Days", says Ruth Lorenz, Vice President New Events of Messe Frankfurt, underlining the great importance of the financial sector.
Within this framework, leading representatives of banks, companies and universities will discuss the hazards of individual banking business models on the first day of M-Days (13 May). Under the heading, 'Next Generation Payment – Challenges, Chances and Risks for Banks', the panellists will report on their experiences and expectations of mobile and online banking in the world of international banking. Thomas-Frank Dapp, economist at Deutsche Bank Research, even anticipates supplementary opportunities for banks: "The mobile-payments cake has not yet been allocated in full. Despite this, the banking sector is increasingly affected by fierce competition in this segment. However, it has good chances to participate. Non-banks, especially the digital eco-systems, are attacking – and doing so over a wide range of segments."
PayPal is a good example of a company from the digital eco-system. The heavyweight in the online payments business now offers an app that enables users to make mobile payments. Thus, in addition to numerous online retailers, it is now possible to use the app to pay at, for example, selected cafés in Berlin. "Driven by the multifarious opportunities offered by modern devices, the mobile revolution is changing user behaviour in a way unparalleled in the last 20 years – especially in the retail trade and the way payments are made", explains Arnulf Keese, CEO, PayPal Deutschland GmbH. "In this mobile age, PayPal now gives its customers the chance to make payments easily, quickly and securely on the basis of the preferred means of payment", says Keese.
The second event in the evening of the first day will deal with mobile and IT security. Experts will discuss various forms of authentication between the opposing needs of convenience and security. That many of the banks' mobile payment projects fail to reach the launch stage is no surprise to Matthias Hönisch, Head of Card Business Unit Payment System Department of the National Association of German Cooperative Banks (BVR): "The majority of mobile payment projects are still in 'Powerpoint mode' and will get no further. This is because banks, which despite reports to the contrary are actually very active in this field, are subject to high regulatory demand in terms of data protection and security. Moreover, in the case of most mobile-payment projects, users are unaware that they are paying with their data without receiving an adequate consideration in return." The degree of user acceptance will dictate whether or not this situation is changed in the near future.
At M-Days on 13 and 14 May 2014, visitors will not only be able to discover the mobile perspective of the banking sector. The international specialised exhibition with integrated congress will also reveal the latest trends in all core areas of mobile applications: Mobile Strategy, Mobile Enterprise, Mobile Commerce, Mobile Marketing and Mobile Media. Free exhibition and congress tickets are available until 8 May 2014.
Email-Expo, Trade Fair and Congress for Data Driven Marketing, will be held for the 5th time concurrently with the 9th M-Days. As an established meeting place for the sector, the congress offers detailed information relating to the specific subjects of marketing automation, CRM, lead generation, content marketing and associated disciplines.
