Green Week Berlin: More countries participating than ever before

The International Green Week Berlin 2013 begins on 18 January with the largest number of participating countries in its history. From then until 27 January a total of 1,630 exhibitors from 67 countries (2012: 1,624 / 59) will be presenting a unique display of the latest achievements and capabilities of agriculture, the food industry and horticulture. The number of countries taking part is the highest since this event was inaugurated in 1926, and has increased by some 15 per cent since last year. Exhibitors from Sudan and Kosovo are represented for the first time. This year's partner country, the Netherlands, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its first appearance at the Green Week. A total of 14 German federal states are presenting food products as well as luxury food and beverages from many different regions of the country – authentic and with local colour.

As it did last year, the world's largest consumer for agriculture, food and horticulture occupies 26 hall complexes and a total display area of 115,000 square metres. The organisers, Messe Berlin, are expecting attendance to exceed 400,000, including 100,000 trade visitors.

Taking pride of place in the supporting programme is the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture 2013 (GFFA), from 17 to 19 January, in which more than 80 ministers and vice-ministers of agriculture and the leading representatives of agriculture and the food industry are expected to take part. The Green Week 2013 will be officially opened by the Federal Minister of Agriculture Ilse Aigner (17 Jan., 6 p.m., ICC Berlin, Hall 1). At the start of the event itself the Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel will head the offical tour of the fair on 18 January.

For experts and professionals more than 300 conferences, meet-ings, and seminars are taking place during the course of the fair. Approximately 200 leading nationale and international politicians have announced their intention to attend, accompanierd by their delegation. Some 5,000 journalists from 70 countries will be provid-ing coverage of the events taking place in Berlin, in the printed word, images and sound. To ensure equal amounts of entertain-ment and information there are also more than 20 stages and cook-ery studios in the exhibition halls. Somewhere in the region of 100, 000 specialities from all over the world are on offer at the fair, more than 10, 000 pets and domesticated animals can be found on the Exhibition Grounds, and a sea of more than 40, 000 flowering plants in the International Floral Hall alone will delight all gardening enthusiasts.

The Green Week, now taking place for the 78th time, can look back on a tradition going back 87 years. From its origins as a basic, local market place in its founding year, 1926, it has evolved into the world's largest consumer show for agriculture, food and horticulture. Since then a total of more than 80, 000 exhibitors from 125 countries have presented a comprehensive range of products from every continent to the more than 31 million members of the public and trade visitors who have attended this event. The International Green Week Berlin 2013 is organised by Messe Berlin GmbH and its non-commercial sponsors are the German Farmers' Union (DBV) and the Federation of German Food and Drink Industries (BVE).
