Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound extend their leading positions

With 2,388 exhibitors from 55 countries (2011: 2,380 exhibitors, 54 countries) and around 110,000 visitors from 120 countries (2011: 109,002 visitors, 124 countries), the two fairs in Frankfurt am Main were able to maintain the high level achieved last year.

The links forged by Musikmesse to the music industry were strengthened yet more in 2012. For the second time, the PRG Live Entertainment Award was held in the 'Festhalle' as the opening event of the two fairs and brought together many of the leading names from Germany's creative business. More exhibitors than the year before made presentations in the Musikbiz section. And, for the first time, one of the major online portals for legal music downloads –musicload.de – was also representedPanel discussions, workshops and matchmaking sessions were held at the new Musikbiz Lounge & Congress, which proved to be a great international success from the first moment.

At Prolight + Sound, the first step of the new concept aimed at including services and congress themes from the field of event management was also successful and the high-grade 'Eventplaza' conference programme attracted over 200 participants.

Altogether, over 41,000 visitors came from outside Germany – especially from The Netherlands, France, Italy, Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Sweden, Poland and Russia.

Such positive impulses are important especially for the many foreign companies who see the current economic situation in the sector rather less optimistically than their German competitors. 84 percent of German Musikmesse visitors consider the current economic situation in the sector to be satisfactory to good. Only 77 percent of foreign visitors hold this view.

Prolight + Sound visitors see the current situation in the sector in a more positive light than their colleagues from the musical instrument industry. A very large proportion of them (90 percent) are optimistic about the future. In this case, too, not quite so many visitors from outside Germany share this opinion (81 percent). Hence, exhibitors were all the more delighted by the echo from visitors to their stands – overall, more exhibitors than the year before rated the orders received and the degree to which they had achieved their goals for the fair as good: 90 percent of all exhibitors were of this opinion – an increase of around 5 percentage points on 2011 and given by both German and foreign exhibitors.

This year's 33rd Musikmesse and 18th Prolight + Sound were accompanied by an extensive programme of awards for products and personalities, lectures, concerts, autographs sessions and live demonstrations. Altogether, there were over 1,000 individual events on the programme. Moreover, the Musikmesse attracted more events to Frankfurt's clubs and concert halls, such as the Women of the World festival and Musikbiz@Night, in addition to established events such as the hr3@night radio festival and the gala of the German Pianist Award (www.musikmesse-events.com).

The next Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound trade fairs will be held from 10 to 13 April 2013.

This year, editions of Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound will be held in Shanghai and make their debut in Moscow. Music China and Prolight + Sound Shanghai will run from 11 to 14 October 2012. In Russia, Messe Frankfurt and the US National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) are cooperating for the first time on the première of NAMM Musikmesse Russia and Prolight + Sound NAMM Russia from 16 to 19 May 2012.
