| Drinktec News Clips: World Champion And Thirst Quenchers…. Beer sommelier world championship: drinktec 2009 is not just presenting outstanding technologies – it also has the honour of hosting a live beer sommelier world championship – the first of its kind. Karl Schiffner, who runs his eponymous restaurant specialising in beer in the Salzburg district of Aigen, was named winner of the first beer sommelier world championship in Sonthofen in April – very impressive, as the challenge was certainly not easy. Schiffner, an Austrian, had to win through against 47 competitors from five countries, answering questions such as, "What do the beers ale, porter and stout have in common?", or "What enzymes are responsible for converting sugar into beer wort?". Would you have known the answers? In the flavour test those taking part had to taste 33 flavours, from which they had to identify ten. And in the final round the six best beer experts had to describe beers such as India Pale Ale, or Swiss Samichlaus beer, which is only brewed once a year for St Nicholas Day, and recommend food to go with them. Schiffner passed the test with flying colours and will demonstrate samples of his art – and of course a wide range of beers – at drinktec, on 15, 16 and 17 September from 11.30 am to 2.00 pm and from 4.00 pm to 5.30 pm in the drinktec Lounge in Hall B1. Product and brand piracy is an issue at many trade fairs and drinktec has also made appropriate arrangements in this regard. The regional court 'Landgericht München 1' is keeping some time free during drinktec to deal promptly with any disputes. Apart from that, all drinktec exhibitors have signed and thus accepted an antiplagiarism clause in the participation conditions. A blanket ban on photography is another measure that should curb dishonest competition. The German Patent and Trademark Office will also be represented for the first time at drinktec, with an information stand where drinktec visitors can obtain comprehensive information on all aspects of industrial property protection. Employees from the Office will be answering questions on patents, utility models, registered designs and brands, and presenting their online service. Free thirst-quencher I: If you want to find an oasis of peace and relaxation in the hustle and bustle of the fair, we recommend the drinktec Lounge in Hall B1, where beer and soft drinks are being given away by Sinalco and König Ludwig International, the brewery based in Kaltenberg Castle. The bar is free but is linked to an appeal for funds and you should put at least one euro in the donation box provided, as it is all in a good cause. The proceeds are going to the 'Hilfsverein Nymphenburg e.V.', which was founded by Duchess Marie of Bavaria, and is committed to alleviating the extreme poverty of the elderly, the sick and children in the former Eastern Bloc countries. Free thirst-quencher II: Of course nobody must leave drinktec thirsty. The lemonade manufacturer Sinalco is distributing a total of 35, 000 bottles of a new orange-flavoured soft drink over the six days of the fair – a welcome thirst quencher to drink on the way home or in your hotel. After a tiring day at the exhibition, there should be no shortage of takers for the 0.5 litre PET bottles. Free thirst-quencher III: milk is delicious – and particularly so during the Milk Session in the drinktec forum in Hall B1. On 16 and 17 September there will be samples available from both well-known and new milk producers –sponsored by Royal FrieslandCampina, Döhler and Condetta. write your comments about the article :: © 2009 Exhibition News :: home page |
