Sophisticated, Cosy - Home-Oriented Trends In Garden Design 09/10

Summer living room, style location, status symbol: the more consumers are enjoying outdoor living, the more they value high-quality products for their balconies and terraces. Open-air living is the trend! The fashion factor is therefore becoming more important when it comes to purchasing garden furniture. From 6th to 8th September, 1,350 exhibitors will present the future trends in outdoor living at the spoga garden fair in Cologne.

A current study by BBW Marketing and the Titze consulting firm revealed that nearly 70 per cent of traders now believe that design is a very important factor with regard to garden furniture - only 0.9 per cent believe that design is insignificant. The manufacturers have adjusted to these new challenges and are currently creating high-quality garden furniture from the latest high-tech materials. But that's not all: in the coming season many sophisticated and decorative accessories will also be taking over the outdoor area. Elegant decorative cushions, outdoor carpets, lamps and small pieces of furniture - these weather-resistant variants can transform a balcony or terrace into a summer living room. These items are ideally complemented by objects of art made of glass, metal or wood that are real eye-catchers for a lawn or a flowerbed.

The trend colour of 2010: orange
As consumers' environmental awareness increases, so does the target group of LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability). Accordingly, garden furniture made from authentic materials and featuring natural tones such as cappuccino and mocha will continue to be in demand next year. To create a summery atmosphere, these natural tones should be combined with bright colours. In addition to purple, red and green, fiery orange tones are pepping up chairs, cushions and accessories in the garden.

German cosiness - now with a modern edge
Familiar forms instead of flashy experiments, comfort instead of purism - against the background of the current economic crisis, consumers are retreating into their own private space in a search for calming comfort to counteract the turbulent world outside. The manufacturers are meeting the consumers' wishes with outdoor furniture models that radiate an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. But this "new cosiness" is more modern and sophisticated than before. Lounges, for example, look like shells and a recliner may remind you of a wave. Sunshades with playful details such as ruffles and tassels provide sun protection outside, and even garden gnomes are once again a must-have - but only in a spruced-up form.

Up and coming: modular furniture
Tailored and distinctly individual pieces - this is what the garden furniture manufacturers are counting on in 2010. Consumers are looking not for "off-the-shelf" furniture but for items that reflect their own personality. Modules that provide perfect individuality include corner couches and sofas which, depending on the consumer's wishes, can be fitted with either a left or a right extension. Linkable building blocks that work according to the domino principle will also be presented here. They can be arranged horizontally or vertically and provide optimal scope for creative freedom.

Barbecues and fireplaces - now also combined
A burning passion: in 2010, outdoor barbecuing will once again be a top trend in Germany. The traditional open-air chef has now been transformed into a garden gourmet whose "hearth" has less and less need of an open flame. However, if you would like to enjoy the special atmosphere of real fire on your terrace, manufacturers are offering more and more outdoor fireplaces, many of which are very design-oriented. The highlight is a combined barbecue and fireplace that features an optional barbecue attachment.
