Veteran Health Care Leader at the Opening Session of WEFTEC®.09

Dr. Mike Magee, MD, a veteran health care leader and author of "Healthy Waters: What Every Health Professional Should Know About Water", will deliver the keynote address during the Opening General Session of WEFTEC.09 this fall in Orlando, Fla. The opening session will kick off the Water Environment Federation's 82nd annual technical exhibition and conference, a four day event that is expected to draw thousands of water quality professionals to the Orange County Convention Center from October 10-14, 2009.

A Senior Fellow for Health Policy at the Center for Aging Services Technologies of the American Association of Homes & Services for the Aging and Editor of Health Commentary.org and Healthy-Waters.org, Dr. Magee is well-known for his unique perspective on health care and for the championing of patient rights and principled leadership including environmental health, scientific innovation, and health system transformation in the United States. From 2003 to 2007, Dr. Magee hosted "Health Politics with Dr. Mike Magee, " a weekly Internet program that covered news and information related to health issues and health care. As host of the program that produced more than 180 segments, Dr. Magee helped viewers understand the big picture of health and the inner workings of the United States health care system. Also recognized as an accomplished author, he has written and published 10 books on health-related issues including Healthy Waters.

First published in 2005, Healthy Waters highlights the facts and figures about water and its enormous impact to our quality of life. Viewing water management as a test of humanity's ability to handle complex issues in a cooperative and compassionate manner, Dr. Magee suggests that water is both an environmental and public health issue. To help spread this message, he began touring the country two years ago and launched the Healthy Waters Initiative. The goal of the initiative is to raise awareness about the vital importance of clean water to public health and to generate action on water-related issues. Dr. Magee's keynote address will focus on the direct correlation between access to potable water and public health.

Scheduled for Monday, October 12 from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., the opening session has been reformatted this year to increase its value to WEFTEC attendees. In addition to the keynote address, the program will feature WEF President Rebecca West and recognition of WEF award winners and the 2009 Stockholm Junior Water Prize winners. Attendees are encouraged to attend a special Q&A with Dr. Magee immediately following the opening session program as well as a book signing later that day in the WEFTEC Bookstore.

With a world-class technical program of 122 technical sessions, 31 workshops and nine facility tours, WEFTEC.09 is the largest conference of its kind in North America and offers the best water quality training and education available today. Also recognized as the largest water quality exhibition in the world, the WEFTEC exhibition provides attendees with unparalleled access to the latest water quality developments, research, regulations, solutions, and cutting-edge technologies.
