Febraban Kicks Off Ciab 2009

Once again Ciab Febraban 2009 confirms its condition as the largest event for Information Technology (IT) and new business models for Latin American financial institutions. The 19th edition, scheduled for June 17, 18 and 19, 2009 at Transamerica Expo Center, in São Paulo, already has 14 sponsors and 75% of the space for exhibiter stands has been sold. The Diamond category sponsors are: CPM Braxis, IBM, Itautec, Diebold Procomp, HP, Oi and Perto. The sponsors in the other categories are CA, CSC BRASIL, DTS, Microsoft and NCR, as well as Eccox.

Serasa is once again a co-sponsor of the event, comprised of an exhibit area of nearly four thousand square meters, as well as a congress for nearly 1.5 thousand financial representatives from around the world, spread about three auditoriums for conferences, lectures and debates.

In the previous edition, Ciab Febraban gathered 1.5 thousand participants, representing 14 different countries. The congress had 28 panels with 89 speakers and 30 international keynote speakers. Altogether, there were 16 thousand visitors for a total of 100 stands from 84 exhibiting countries, gathering the greatest IT developers in the world.

BANKARIZATION
Held by the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban) the central theme for the 19th Ciab will be "Bankarization – access to banking services on the part of the entire population", which will be debated in several panels.

Despite the progress, the Latin American Federation of Banks (Felaban) informs the bankarization indexes in the region's countries are still very low. On the sub-continent, only 34.65% of the adult population has access to banking services. Chile leads with 60% of its population with guaranteed access and Brazil is slightly above the region's average, with 43%, and should close 2008 with 46%.

In Brazil, in order to have an idea of the strength of this movement, from 2000 to 2007, the number of current accounts has increased 76% and the number of credit cards 232%. From now on, the challenge is to further increase access to these services, and at the same time, ensure quality information to new clients for decision making.

Other subjects will be addressed together with the central theme, such as Direct Authorized Debit (DDA), which should eliminate paper dockets in the country; the evolution of payment means and cards; mobile banking; sustainability; Green IT (or technology operations with responsibility towards the environment); security and the Internet, among others. Operational risk, costs and resource management of all banking activities, especially IT, will also be highlighted at the 19th edition of the congress.

NEW COMMAND
Ciab Febraban 2009 will be under the command of vice-president of Means at Banco Real, Gustavo Roxo, who assumed the function of sectorial director of Technology at the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), and the coordinator general of Ciab Febraban.

Roxo is an engineer graduated from Poli-USP, with an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has 19 years of experience in the market, 12 of which at Banco Real. More recently, with the purchase of Real by the Santander Group, he was nominated vice-president of Means in Brazil, where he is now responsible for COO (Chief Operating Officer) functions, which he exercised at Banco Real, plus those of Expense Management, Operational Risk Management and Organization.

International Road Shows and preparatory events
Febraban also confirms that in 2009 it will repeat the preparatory events to the Ciab Febraban congress. For three consecutive years now, the Federation holds one-day events in the main Latin American cities, as well as events in São Paulo with national banks. These events are normally held in April and May.

These events discuss issues beforehand that will be debated in more detail at the Ciab Febraban Congress, and in the last edition, they gathered 982 bank and institution representatives and counted on their own sponsors. The international events were held in nine different countries in the region, and the themes debated at the preparatory events to Ciab 2008 were: mobility, security, forms of payment, document digitalization, digital certification and Green IT.
