IMDEX Asia 2009

Navy and coastguard top-brass from the region and beyond will converge in Singapore to attend IMDEX Asia 2009, the premier dedicated maritime defence show serving the Asia-Pacific region, to be held at the Singapore Expo from 12-14 May.

This year, the landmark maritime exhibition will be complemented by the first International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC), organised by the Republic of Singapore Navy, together with the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies and SingExhibitions. IMDEX Asia 2009 is organised by IMDEX Asia Singapore. IMSC will be held from 13 -14 May.

More than 35 navies and coastguards will be represented at the show, including the conference. The top brass will comprise about 20 navy chiefs and director-generals of coastguards coming from Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Denmark, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Qatar, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom, the United States and Uruguay.

IMDEX Asia 2009 will be opened by the soon-to-be Deputy Prime Minister (effective from 1 April) and Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean, on 12 May. Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, will deliver the Keynote Address for IMSC on 13 May.

The IMSC, which has the theme "Realising Safe and Secure Seas for All", seeks to promote global maritime safety and security and update maritime practitioners on the latest cooperative efforts, legal and political frameworks and technological developments in this arena.

Military speakers at the conference include Admiral Gary Roughead, the Chief of Naval Operations, United States Navy, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band, First Sea Lord and Chief Of Naval Staff, The Royal Navy; and Vice Admiral Nirmal Verma, Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, Indian Navy; Rear Admiral Bruno Paulmier, Deputy Secretary-General to the Secretariat-General of the Sea, France; Rear Admiral Alan Du Toit, Commander Border Protection Command, Australia; Professor Geoffrey Till, Professor of Maritime Studies, Joint Services Command and Staff College, United Kingdom; Mr Masahiro Akiyama, Chairman, Ocean Policy Research Foundation, Tokyo; Professor Carlyle A Thayer, Professor of Politics, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of New South Wales; Professor Robert C Beckman, Associate the Professor at Faculty of Law, National University of ingapore; and Dr Ralf Emmers, Associate Professor and Head of Graduate Studies, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies.

More speakers from the maritime consultancies, shipping associations and insurance sector are in the process of confirming their speaking engagements.

The conference will have four sessions, namely:
• Session I: Global and Regional Maritime Security Overview
• Session II: Regional Engagements: Initiatives, Challenges and Opportunities
• Session III: Policy and Legal Frameworks for Maritime Security
• Session IV: Capacity Building: Nationally and Internationally

There is also a series of value-add activities organised by the Republic of Singapore Navy, in conjunction with the Exhibition and Conference: an inaugural International Maritime Information Sharing Exercise and the Western Pacific Naval Symposium Multilateral Sea Exercise. These will be hosted at the Republic of Singapore Navy's new hangi Command and Control Centre.
