Anuga FoodTec 2009

From 10th to 13th March 2009, Anuga FoodTec in Cologne is presenting machines, technology and new products for the full spectrum of needs related to the food and beverage industry. Modest optimism among manufacturers of food production machinery and packaging machines. Despite the current financial and business crisis, manufacturers of food production machinery and packaging machines in Germany see a chance to achieve a level of turnover for the entire year 2009 that will match last year's results. For this to be possible, however, in the first quarter of this year the financial markets would have to stabilize once again.

This is the outlook one week before the start of the international trade fair Anuga FoodTec in Cologne. The trade fair is taking place from 10th to 13th March in the city on the Rhine. It presents products and solutions for all aspects of food and beverage production - from processing to packaging, and from hygiene to warehousing to distribution, in its role as "the most important showcase depicting the future of the sector", explained Sabine Loos, Vice President Technology and Environment at Koelnmesse GmbH, during the run-up to the event.

Last year manufacturers of food production machinery and packaging machines in Germany achieved a modest five per cent increase in turnover. The number of incoming orders in the last quarter of 2008, however, was "extremely low", which was due above all to a decline in orders from abroad, reports Prof. Herbert J. Buckenhüskes, head of the Food Technology department of the German Agricultural Society (DLG). Sector representative are basing their hopes on production processes that are even more effective and on more efficient use of resources. In addition to optimising production output, this also could lead to more thorough use of raw materials and greatly reduced consumption of water and energy, added Buckenhüskes.

This year Anuga FoodTec is taking place for the fifth time. This trade fair for food and beverage technology offers the international food business an information and purchasing platform that covers the entire spectrum of technology and investment requirements for production in all segments of the food industry. According to Loos, a total of 1, 181 suppliers from 39 countries are taking part in the fair this year. This is the highest number of registrations ever received for Anuga FoodTec, the organizers said. Around 50 per cent of the suppliers are from outside Germany, with the largest foreign contingents coming from Italy, the Netherlands, France, Denmark and Switzerland.

Occupying a gross exhibition space of 110, 000 square metres, the trade fair provides a wealth of information related to processing and packaging technologies, automation, food safety and quality management, environmental and information technologies, biotechnology, IT, technological process materials, ingredients and services. In addition to the exhibitors' presentations, the attractions at Anuga FoodTec include special shows and forums devoted to further developments and new approaches. The "Robotik-Pack-Line", for example, which was initiated by DLG, Koelnmesse and renowned technology partners, shows the safe, fast and hygienic production, processing and packaging of food products - all fully automated.

The international trade fair Anuga FoodTec will take place from Tuesday to Friday of next week. It will be open on each day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., exclusively to trade visitors.
