BioFach and Vivaness 2009

The time has come: BioFach invites the international organic experts to their annual exhibition highlight for the 20th time from 19-22 February, when 2, 717 exhibitors and some 46,000 trade visitors bring 12 halls to life for four days. The entire industry is represented – including the eco and Lohas communities – from the founders of BioFach and the organic pioneers to the young innovative companies on the stand of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology Two-thirds of the exhibitors travel to BioFach and Vivaness from abroad. This time manufacturers from 91 countries occupy a net space of 50,500 m2, which is 7 % growth. As always, Germany is strongly represented with 936 exhibitors, followed by Italy (381), Spain (188), France (182) and Austria (103).

The birthday guests come to Nürnberg from more than 100 countries and can look forward to many highlights. Country of the Year Denmark enhances the exhibition duo with 45 exhibitors and a large portion of Scandinavian organic enjoyment.

The industry and the world's leading exhibition have every reason to celebrate: What began with 240 exhibitors and 1, 457 visitors in the Ludwigshafen town hall in 1990 has now developed into the biggest international platform for the organic industry. The rapid development of the market and exhibition would be unthinkable without their pioneers, to whom BioFach devotes its first Fachhandelstag (Organic Trade Day) on the exhibition Saturday, 21 February.

Organic made in Denmark: Many more exhibitors from Country of the Year
The German organic market was strongly characterized by the specialist trade for a long time, but today organic is available equally in all sales channels. In Denmark, some 90% of organic sales are achieved in the conventional trade – and this is a tradition. Every Dane spends an average of 80 EUR a year on organic food. The EU leader in per head consumption of organic products presents 45 exhibitors at BioFach in 2009, which is 50 % up on the previous year. But not only the Danish domestic market for organic products excels with a 6.5 % market share; Denmark is also a strong export partner, as can be discovered in the Danish pavilion (hall 1).

Organic, fair and very stylish: Eco fashion in the Textile Area
Informed shopping has long ceased to be limited to food only; the trend to natural textiles and eco fashion is obvious. Visitors at the world-leading exhibition duo in 2009 can source information about ethically correct and highly fashionable styles in the newly designed Textile Area (hall 7). This special presentation starts off with 47 exhibitors. The stylish ambience of the lounge in the Textile Area invites visitors to communicate, discuss and make contact. Small events, interviews and a book presentation also take place here. The Textile Forum at the BioFach Congress offers seven presentations with information about current developments in the market segment of eco fashion. The topics include ecology in the textile chain and concepts and portraits of green fashion labels.

Organic + Fair – special show with over 100 product presentations
Organic Monitor estimates fair trade sales in 2008 at over 3.5 billion US dollars. Two-thirds of all fair trade products come from organic farming. Visitors can see products produced by ecological and fair means at the special show Organic + Fair (hall 3). 28 exhibitors and 125 product presentations reflect the international, national and regional aspects of the entire spectrum of fair trade. Supplementary information is provided by the Fair & Ethical Trade Forum at the congress, which discusses the issues of social responsibility and fairness plus standards and certification at nine events.

Organic wine experts' get-together: Wine Hall enters second round
Worldwide, some 121,000 ha of vines – including areas under conversion – are cultivated organically at present, according to the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture, FiBL, Switzerland. This is twice as much as in 2000. Organic wine is capturing the market. After a brilliant premiere in 2008, visitors can experience the high quality of wines from organic production in hall 4A again in 2009. Altogether 304 BioFach exhibitors present the result of their wine-making know-how. The leader is Italy with 89 exhibitors, followed by Germany (80), Spain (47), France (25), and Austria (15).

To enable the birthday guests to drink a toast to the twenty-year-old exhibition with the finest wines, an international jury of 39 well-known tasters sampled the best of the top organic wines from winegrowers around the globe at the end of November 2008. 521 wines from 13 countries entered this year's competition. The jury awarded Special Gold to 11 wines, Gold to 60 and Silver to 129. 124 wines received a recommendation. The awards will be presented to the best wines at BioFach as part of the official tour of the exhibition straight after the opening ceremony. Visitors are invited to get their own picture of the winning wines in the Vinotheque, the tasting area in the Wine Hall. It is hard to imagine fine cooking without organic olive oil. At the Olive Oil Bar in the Wine Hall, the best of the some 80 olive oils entered for the Olive Oil Award will be tasted and chosen by the visitors again this year.

Vivaness 2009: Natural beauty care from all over the world
Natural personal care is attracting more and more devotees worldwide and Vivaness, the World Trade Fair for Natural Personal Care and Wellness, now shows its loveliest products for the third time. 204 natural personal care exhibitors from 23 nations delight the professionals in the day-lit hall 7A and parts of hall 7. The most strongly represented countries after Germany with 100 exhibitors are France (30), Italy (15), Austria (10) and Switzerland (8). Visitors can look forward to the German world market leaders and to some really hot tips. Newcomers in 2009 are cosmetic manufacturers from Brazil, Columbia, Macedonia, Swaziland and the Czech Republic.

Innovations and favourites: New products and “Sales Hits of the Year”
A total of 430 new products have been registered this year. The Vivaness exhibitors present 70 new products on the Novelty Stand in hall 7A, and the BioFach exhibitors are present with 360 innovative new products in hall 3. BioFach and Vivaness award the “Sales Hit of the Year” annually. The coveted award is presented altogether six times this year. The decisive factor for winning the award is the number of times the products were scanned at the POS in organic food shops and organic supermarkets last year.

For the two Jury Awards at BioFach and Vivaness, other factors such as the company’s innovativeness is also taken into account. The “Sales Hits of the Year” at BioFach are Söbbeke’s Natural Rice Pudding (fresh) and Zwergenwiese Strawberry-Rhubarb FruitGarden spread (food). The BioFach Jury Award goes to Herbaria’s Wilde Hilde Salad Spice Mix. The “Sales Hits of the Year” at Vivaness are Dr. Hauschka’s Regeneration Serum and the Winter Dream Sandalwood-Orange Shower Gel from Logona. The Vivaness Jury Award goes to Aquabio’s Thalasso System Day Cream.
