The European Parliament accepted the compromise on the "Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources" with an overwhelming majority last December. For the first time under EU legislation, heat pumps are now accepted as well as wind power and solar systems as a technology suitable for using renewable energy sources. The definitions for renewable energy sources have also been extended by aerothermal and hydrothermal in addition to geothermal energy. This decision by the EU shows the great importance of heat pumps and must now be utilized and promoted by the industry.
