Nottingham Eyes Top Conference Destination Spot

Nottingham aims to be one of the top three UK cities for conferencing by 2010 according to the Nottinghamshire Convention Bureau - the organisation which promotes conferencing and business tourism in the county.

Nottingham's achieved an excellent sixth place ranking as a leading national conferencing destination in the UK Conference Market Survey (UKCMS). And the city now has ambitions to make its offer a first choice for associations and organisations seeking locations for their events - especially those in the medical and bio-science arenas. It is one of six UK Science Cities designated by government.

Helen Sisson, Tourism Leader at Experience Nottinghamshire, the official tourist board that oversees the Nottinghamshire Convention Bureau said:

"The conferencing and association market is a large and profitable sector of which Nottingham is well placed to dominate, with the city having recently played host to the British Society of Haematosis and Thrombisis and The British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH).

"We intend to capitalise on the fact that associations ranked Nottingham sixth as the city they most often selected for conferencing - with Nottingham currently residing above other core cities such as Liverpool, Glasgow and Cardiff."

The Nottinghamshire Convention Bureau team has been promoting the city as a capital for conferences for over three years and they're now reaping the rewards of their efforts.

Helen said: "Nottingham offers a central location, value for money, great transport links, a mature leisure industry and world renowned culture. All of which makes it a popular choice for the thousands of trade associations, professional bodies, societies and organisations in the UK that participate in summit, AGM or annual conference activities.

"In addition to this, over the last five years the variety, number and quality of conference hotels in Nottingham has increased along with the quantity of bed spaces.

"The Nottingham Convention Bureau is continuing to take Nottingham's message to key national conferencing shows such as Confex and Event UK, and heavily targeting the association and corporate sector. Throughout 2009, we will also be looking to target potential ambassadors for the city who are closely related to the core business clusters such as medicine and bio-science."

The Nottingham Convention Bureau is the business tourism arm of the official tourist board for the county, Experience Nottinghamshire, and will be exhibiting at this year's International Confex show, Earls Court London from 24-26 February on stand B440.
