The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2009

The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2009 takes place from 4-8 March, 2009 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The 2008 event attracted 2,300 international exhibitors from 45 countries and regions, while a total of 31,333 buyers from 135 countries and regions came through the doors. The HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show is one of Asia's premier jewellery trade events. Not only is it a key platform for sourcing quality jewellery, but it also adds value with a series of networking and information-exchange activities. The 2009 event sees the addition of a new element in this vein, with the debut of a prestigious international design award.

The International Jewellery Design Excellence (IJDE) Award showcases the "best of the best", being open only to top prize winners at other international jewellery design competitions.

This prestigious, invitational-only event is being organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), in conjunction with the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association, Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association and Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China.

Mr. Raymond Yip, Assistant Executive Director of HKTDC, says: "The award pays tribute to the cream of the crop. Invitations to compete were issued worldwide to winners of other jewellery design competitions; the result is an elite group of entrants with a proven track record in creativity and design to compete for the highest honour. The ultimate winner will be named 'Champion of Champions' during the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show in March."

The competition rewards creativity and uniqueness of the overall concept, quality of craftsmanship and overall beauty. All entries must contain one or more precious metal or precious stones, including gold, platinum, silver, diamond, pearls, gemstones or semi-gemstones.

IJDE was also created with the aim of facilitating communication and exchange of experiences between international jewellery designers, as well as offering inspiration and motivation for everyone involved in the jewellery business worldwide. "The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, as a major industry event, provides the perfect showcase for this, " says Mr. Yip.

IJDE 2009 received 170 entrants from 27 countries and regions; among them seven submissions from the Chinese mainland, and 24 from Hong Kong; 43 from Europe; and 42 from North America. The first round of judging was held in November, with final judging to take place at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show. The award presentation will take place at a Gala Dinner attended by finalists.

A distinguished panel of international judges will gather for the final judging, namely Mr Lawrence Ma, Chairman, HKTDC Jewellery Advisory Committee 2008/09, Hong Kong; Ms Carol Woolton, Jewellery Editor, UK Vogue, UK; Mr Kan Tai Keung, internationally renowned designer, Hong Kong; Mr Jean-François Michaud, internationally renowned jewellery consultant, Switzerland; Mr Joseph Hasbani, Partner, Hasbani Gioielli, Italy; Mr John Souglides, International Director, Jewellery Department, Christie's, UK; Mr Wallace Chan, internationally renowned jewellery designer, Hong Kong; Ms Yao An, Vice-Director, Capital Museum, Chinese mainland; and Ms Marie E Girón, Founder and Partner, MEGAMCAPITAL and MEGADVISE, Spain.
