With a wide range of products and services for the hotel and catering industry, from the 17th to the 21st of October 2008, Hostelco will bring together 2,300 direct and represented exhibitors taking up the whole Montjuïc exhibition centre and expects an audience of around 100,000 visitors. With these figures, the show is confirmed as the leading event of its kind in Spain and the second most important in Europe.

Organised by Fira de Barcelona and FELAC - Federación Española de Asociaciones de Fabricantes de Maquinaria para Hostelería, Colectividades e Industrias Afines (Spanish Federation of Hospitality and Catering Equipment Manufacturers), Hostelco will feature the following sectors: Hotel and Catering Equipment and Machinery; Cookware and Tableware; Management, Control, Information Technology and Safety; Textiles and Uniforms; Furniture and Decoration and highlight four areas: Coffee Area, with a wide range of products and services; Expolimp, dedicated to professional cleaning; Food Service, the Horeca (Hotel, Restaurant and Catering) food channel and Intervending, with the most innovative automatic distribution proposals.

For the fourth year running, the show will have a full house and, for the first time, will occupy the second floor of hall 2 and increase the exhibition space in Avenida Mª Cristina. An internal shuttle service will be available to visitors to move around the exhibition centre.

Through a series of exhibitions and audiovisuals, the new space "Hotel Univers" will present the different aspects which make up the "hotel" concept: reception and individual attention to clients; management of environmentally-friendly resources and use of alternative energies; the importance of architecture and design to integrate the hotel in natural surroundings; a wellness proposal; three room models, each designed to be adapted to individual client styles; an area dedicated to debating the current situation and prospects of the hotel industry; and lastly, an audiovisual entitled La huella del viajero (The traveller's footprint), which will show hotels in places all over the world and the project of a hypothetical hotel in the year 2050.

Hostelco is also organising the second European Pizza Championship; the final of the National Baristas Championship, organised by the Cultural Coffee Forum; and the Window Cleaning Contest, among other activities, as well as a wide range of workshops relative to each sector.

Innovation-related trends in the machinery sector can be summarised as follows faster machinery with higher productivity levels. optimisation of spaces thanks to compact equipment; environmentally-friendly energy efficiency through the use of system which economise energy and water consumption and reduce sound levels. devices which guarantee maximum hygiene. use of longer-lasting materials. search for low-cost solutions with the aim of increasing cost-effectiveness of equipment. development of equipment adapted to culinary customs of other cultures. avant-garde ergonomic designs which provide elegance and functionality.

According to a report by FELAC, the turnover of the 168 companies which make up the federation was 2,190 million euros in 2007, 6.9% more than in 2006. Exports rose even more, by 12.4%, to 710 million. The sector with the highest turnover in 2007 was large catering kitchens and equipment (cooking equipment, auxiliary cooking equipment, ventilation and air conditioning, storage and transport and dish washing).

From this economic data, Jordi Roure, president of FELAC and of Hostelco, highlights the export growth trend. "This development is largely due to the investment in R&D&I made by Spanish companies in recent years and the improvements in the productivity, quality and design of products, which are more and more in demand abroad", says Roure.
