The space industry is booming. New programs and space missions to Mars and the moon require latest developments and pioneering technologies. The public and the industry is almost unaware of the fact that a number of technological findings are a result of many decades of aerospace research, such as the air bag, the antilock braking system ABS or navigation devices.

ESA has developed its own program to promote the idea of technology transfer more actively across Europe. Frank M. Salzgeber, Head of the TTP Department: "The European industry is constantly on the lookout for new technologies and methods it can discover and use for itself. Gaining a head start in knowledge is a must for global competition as innovative technological developments can be considered a decisive factor for national and international economic growth and global competitiveness. The effective use and marketing of existing knowledge is a prerequisite for successful innovations. Unfortunately, the European industry and the European aerospace business are circling in different orbits and hardly meet. The second Technology Transfer Conference seeks to link up the industry and the aerospace business in a more targeted and active way. This year's conference focuses on security.

The conference particularly aims at industrial representatives and gives examples of how space technology from the field of security can be used in other industry sectors and how the findings from aerospace science can promote economic success. The conference focuses on three main topics in great detail:

- Safety and border control with Terahertz
- Sensors, radar and earth observation
- Protection by shielding
