The 10th Edition Further Strengthens Hong Kong’s Lighting Industry

An important lighting trade event in Asia and one of the top three lighting shows in the world, the HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair 2008 will further enhance Hong Kong's lighting industry. Running from 27-30 October 2008, the 10 th edition of the fair will showcase new and fashionable lighting products of more than 1,500 exhibitors at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Hong Kong 's total exports of lighting products reached HK$11.43 billion (US$1.46 billion) in 2007. The 2007 export figures reveal the rising popularity of Hong Kong lighting products in various parts of the world. Exports to many countries recorded significant growth, including France (+44.2%), South Africa (+134.5%), Russia (+118.8%), Pakistan (+94.1%), Indonesia (+113.9%) and India (+82.9%). To remain highly competitive, the emphasis of the industry is placed on design as well as product quality. Hong Kong companies are well known for adaptability and responsiveness to the rapidly changing taste of consumers, and are capable of offering items that appeal to both quality- and price-conscious customers.

Worldwide concern on global warming has fostered the demand for environmentally-friendly lighting products. A wide range of energy-saving products can be found in Green Lighting Zone. In addition, special zones for 2008 are Crystal Indulgence, Galaxy of Stars, Holiday Favour, Outdoor Lighting, Parts & Accessories and World of Table Lamps. These zones represent the emerging trends in the consumer market.

The number of international buyers reinforces the status of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair. Last year, close to 27,900 buyers from 133 countries and regions vistied the fair, an increase of 11.4% over 2006.

Axel Hamelink, General Manager of Massive Export NV from Belgium, agrees that the fair is where business partners can be found. "This is the third time in a row that we participate at the fair. It has proven to be the most significant lighting event in the region for contact customers from East Asia, Europe, the Americas and beyond, " said Mr Hamelink, speaking at the 2007 fair.

The spotlight will be on Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition. After a successful debut in 2007, the competition will return to foster shining new talent for the industry. The objectives of the competition are to cultivate design talents to develop innovative product designs, promote Hong Kong's lighting products among international buyers and encourage the younger generation to join the lighting industry. The theme of this is year is "The Power of Light", the competition is divided into student group and open group. The finalists' designs will be presented at the exhibition.

Buyers of Hong Kong International Lighting Fair will also be able to source related products from other concurrent events. The Hong Kong International Building and Decoration Materials & Hardware Fair, Hong Kong International Furniture Fair and Eco Expo Asia – International Trade Fair on Environmental Protection will run concurrently from 28 – 31 October at AsiaWorld-Expo, adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport.
