New York International Gift Fair

An intriguing variety of companies from five different countries will debut at Accent on Design and three new, emerging American designers will be showcased in "A+ : The Young Designers' Platform", August 17-21, 2008, at the New York International Gift Fair. Other market highlights include an after-hours "Celebrate Design" reception, hosted by the "JAPANC" project, at New York City's Felissimo Design House on Monday, August 18. Accent on Design is an exciting, juried collection of design-led home, lifestyle and gift merchandise. Its 180 contemporary and innovative exhibitors span all product categories, presenting established design leaders alongside emerging resources.

"Accent on Design has a long-standing tradition of raising the bar for design-driven trade events, " said Dorothy Belshaw, GLM senior vice president and NYIGF director. "Innovative programs like A+ which introduce new talent, as well as partnerships with cutting edge projects like JapanC, sustain the division's vitality."

Accent on Design Welcomes New Exhibitors
Some 17 companies from Australia, England, Italy, Japan and the United States will participate in Accent on Design for the first time in August 2008. Newcomers include: acrylic (Japan); Canvas (New York, NY); Cardboardesign (New York, NY); Designs abroad (Australia); JapanC (New York, NY); J Schatz (Greene, NY); Joey Roth (Brooklyn, NY); Kshocolat (UK); Lovegrove & Repucci LLC (Pottersville, NJ); Oscar Maschera SNC (Italy); pico llc (Upper Montclair, NJ): sallbo design (Japan); Thelermont Hupton (UK); TwistTogether Company (Brooklyn, NY); Vincent Reardon LLC (Boston, MA); Watchismo LLC (Brooklyn, NY); and W2 Products/Whitbread + Wilkinson (UK).

All exhibitors in Accent on Design are selected by an independent jury of design professionals on the basis of originality; creativity; authenticity of product design; new and innovative use of materials; functionality; consistent and continuous new product creations; and contemporary design focus.

A+: The Young Designers' Platform Showcases Fresh Talents
Launched in February 2008 as an "incubator" program for new designers and design innovation, A+ showcases emerging talents, alongside Accent on Design's established contemporary design resources. Prototypes and finished products from three new American designers will be featured in the August edition.

Diane Ruengsorn is the founder of Domestic Aesthetic in Astoria, NY, a young company offering well-designed, affordable and sustainable home products. Heather Lins, a designer from Madison, WI, will present a collection of soft goods with designs based on vintage typography, eye charts and conversation bubbles. Stanley Ruiz, a Brooklyn, NY-based industrial designer with an extensive background in craft design and production, designs contemporary home accessories and furniture pieces which fuse industrial and natural design.

"Celebrate Design" Reception Provide After-Hours Networking
The JAPANC project, an 11-week showcase of Japanese culture and design, will serve as the backdrop for a "Celebrate Design" reception on Monday, August 18, 6:30 - 8:30pm, at the Felissimo Design House at 10 West 56th Street. This exclusive event, which is free for NYIGF exhibitors, attendees and press, will feature an exclusive preview of the project's first installment, as well as complementary Japanese sake and other treats.

Led by the creative team of Tobias Wong and Josée LePage, JAPANC showcases innovative products from more than 70 Japanese firms. Running from August 16 through November 1, JAPANC presents products including fine stationery; contemporary furniture; skin creams made from fermented rice; collectible 'keitai' cell phone straps; robots of every shape, size and color; zakka knickknacks; kawaii anime characters; and high-tech rice cookers.
