Concerts At Midem 2008: Who’ll Be The Next Amy?

With 98 rock/pop, world music, electro, classical and jazz concerts, the 42nd edition of the Midem international music market will once again offer a range of new talents and will provide a springboard for the 495 artists performing there. Midem will be held in Cannes from 27-31 January 2008.

Every year, Midem showcases those who will be making musical headlines over the year to both professionals and the general public. These have included Razorlight and Mariza at Midem 2004, Katie Melua, Ayo and Nemanja Radulovic in 2005, Raul Paz and Yaron Herman in 2006, Buika, Amy Winehouse and Patrick Watson in 2007, to name but a few.

The following acts will be performing at Midem 2008 and are already enjoying significant buzz, which, in view of the amount of attention already being attracted by the performances, should intensify and promises an explosive year.

Pop/rock act Reverend & the Makers, currently all over the British charts but yet to find international fame, will be headlining the British night at Midem. Midem will also be offering an 80s revival with the Black and White Years, produced by Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison, and Dragonette, fronted by the charismatic Martina Sorbara and already noted for their performances supporting mythical band New Order. For Yael Naim and the Pascale Picard Band, who have already seen enormous success in France and Quebec respectively, MIDEM will be an important boost to the international scene.

Electro has an important part to play at Midem 2008 with much-hyped and very classy performances from Danton Eeprom, who is soon to release an album, Yuksek, the latest signing from French label UWe who created a stir at the last Transmusicales de Rennes festival, and James Priestley, co-founder of the legendary Sunday afternoon 'secretsundaze' events, now being held around the world.

Argentinean phenomenon and maestro of the tango and the milonga, Melingo, will also be performing at Midem before the release in early 2008 of his long-awaited album "Maldito Tango" on the Manaña label, founded by Eduardo Makaroff from Gotan Project.

There are some great classical and jazz acts also waiting to be discovered, notably with one of the first major appearances of the young American soprano Takesha Meshé Kizart and that of the latest discovery from CNIPAL, French soprano Olivia Doray. There will also be long-awaited performances from trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf, French saxophonist Géraldine Laurent and Slovenian pianist Bojan Gorisek among others.

98 artists and bands will be performing at Midem 2008, including around 30 within the framework of the new initiative for discovering talent, Midem Talent Only. The concerts mentioned, and all of those under the Midem Talent Only banner, are open to all participants, but will be by invitation only to members of the public.
