BioFach 2008: First Organic Olive Oil Award Chosen By Visitors

BioFach 2008 presents wine from certified organically grown grapes for the first time in hall 4A. Not only organic wine from all over the world moves into the modern, day-lit Wine Hall; the Olive Oil Bar also radiates a new brilliance there in the seventh year of its existence. Combined with the trend topic wine and enhanced by culinary experiences, the Wine Hall offers the perfect ambience for the fascination of the international facets of organic olive oil.

From food tasting course to olive oil tasting, there will be much to appeal to the senses of the some 45,000 trade visitors from 21-24 February 2008. Newly introduced at BioFach 2008 is an award for the best organic olive oil. The special feature of this award is the tasters, as the visitors at the exhibition decide the winners.

The Olive Oil Award guarantees an objective assessment of the constantly growing number of olive oils presented at BioFach. Over 60 exhibitors from 10 countries were present with their oils in 2007, the large majority of them also at the Olive Oil Bar. Besides the classics like Italy, Spain and Greece, there were also European "exotics" like Cyprus and Albania. The meanwhile established overseas countries of Chile and Australia were joined by Saudi Arabia and Palestine, the first producers from the Arab region.

The Olive Oil Bar at BioFach gives the visitors various means of access to olive oil. A list of all the oils exhibited with accurate information on variety, origin and stand creates an initial impression. The list can be used to compile an individual selection for tasting, either with advice or on one's own initiative. Those who would like to know more about taste, classification and professional judging of olive oils should attend the tasting sessions that take place several times a day.

Forum presentations by experts provide facts on EU legislation and the olive oil market. The new Olive Oil Award offers interested visitors an informative appraisal of the products exhibited. The olive oils are judged anonymously by coding the samples. The judging system is numerical, ensures even distribution of the samples and the same tasting chances for all participants. The tasting marks are processed immediately and the ranking is shown continuously until the official presentation of the winners on Saturday afternoon.
