| Göteborg Book Fair We are delighted to be celebrating two important anniversaries at the Göteborg Book Fair this year: the 300th anniversary of the birth of Carl von Linné and the 100th anniversary of the birth of Astrid Lindgren. The Göteborg Book Fair, September 27-30, 2007, is one of the biggest cultural events in Scandinavia with more than 100 000 visitors. There will be 425 seminars and more than 800 exhibitors at this year's Fair, which features Estonia as the guest country. The Göteborg Book Fair is working together with the Estonian Ministry of Culture At the Göteborg Book Fair we look forward to celebrating the Linnean year in many different ways. The Swedish Linnaeus Society will be one of the exhibitors at the Book Fair. Several new books about Carl Linnaeus and his work will be launched at the Book Fair and many seminars, discussions, photographic and other exhibitions will focus both on Carl Linneaus' work as a scientist and the man behind his work. Astrid Lindgren is one of the most beloved authors in Sweden with her books about such characters as Pippi Longstocking, Emil, Ronja the Robber's daughter, the Brothers Lionheart and many others. But she also played an influential role in Swedish domestic politics, with her passion for peace, the environment, children's rights and many other social issues. She lived to be 94, and would have celebrated her 100th birthday on the 14th November. Seminars at the Book Fair this year offer the opportunity to learn more about Astrid Lindgren as book editor and opinion-former. For example, her first book about Pippi was turned down by publishers in 1944, but is now published as 'Original Pippi'. In addition, the well-known illustrator Ilon Wikland talks about her career and the illustrations she did for the Brothers Lionheart, Noisy Village and Ronja the Robber's daughter books, among others. At the Children's Square stage there'll be performances by the actors from Astrid Lindgren's World, film screenings, book readings and talks, arranged by the publishing house Rabén & Sjögren. Children will also enjoy an exciting specially built Astrid Lindgren setting, where they can read books, listen to recorded stories, play games, dress up and participate in storytimes. Estonia will be the country of honour at the Göteborg Book Fair in 2007. Estonian authors, historians, politicians and other intellectuals are invited to highlight both Estonian literature and history as well as the current social and political situation in the country. The illustrator of many Astrid Lindgren stories, Ilon Wikland, is herself originally from Estonia. We look forward to this important introduction of Estonian literature to Scandinavia. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Exhibition News :: home page |
