The Lancet's Asia Medical Forum

Over 400 leading oncology experts, researchers, and policymakers from around the world will convene in Singapore next year for The Lancet's Asia Medical Forum on Cancer Management in Asia in the 21st century, April 21–22.

Currently, very few cancer screening programmes are available in Asia; access to treatment is inadequate—for example, Indonesia has fewer than an eighth of the number of radiotherapy machines needed to provide sufficient coverage for the entire population; and research is still but a fraction of the worldwide effort. Unsurprisingly then the number of cancer survivors in Asia is very small compared with numbers in Europe and the USA.

The Forum will address the specific issues surrounding the provision, and future needs, of effective cancer care in Asia, focusing on the ten most prevalent cancers in the Asia-Pacific region—namely, cancers of the stomach, liver, oesophagus, mouth, colon, lung, breast, uterus, ovary, and prostate.

In addition, world opinion-leaders will discuss the causes of cancer in Asia, health-care systems, and the challenges of providing effective disease management with limited resources, along with views on state-of-the-art techniques in the areas of diagnostics, medical oncology, radiation therapy, and surgical oncology.
