CANEUS 2006 Conference

Major breakthroughs in the use of micro and nano technologies (MNTs) for satellite and commercial defense avionics applications were unveiled on an international scale at the CANEUS 2006 Conference held in Toulouse, France, home of Airbus Industries in France's Aerospace Valley. Some 300 of the world's top scientists, physicists, engineers, venture capitalists, and legal specialists gathered at the event to debate MNT issues for satellite and commercial defense avionics applications. The attendees came away with a number of significant governmental, organizational, academic and industrial agreements that promise to propel MNT technologies forward. The attendance figure represented a 20% increase over that of the last CANEUS 2004 meeting.

CANEUS also has grown it its global participation with countries from North and South America, Europe and Asia. These countries include the United States, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, and most recently Brazil. CANEUS is largely supported by industry groups around the world such as Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, EADS, Airbus, as well as the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy.

Interest in the conference was intense and spanned a very wide range of applications. The conference provided a useful venue for introducing MNT products to the market. Attendees benefited greatly by networking across a broad spectrum of expertise from researchers in the laboratory, to system developers, to program managers and investors, to government policy makers.

Conference highlights included inspirational keynote speeches by Dr. Minoo Dastoor, responsible for NASA's Exploration Systems Directorate, and Professor Hirobumi Saito, responsible for missions at Japan's Space Agency's (JAXA's) Institute of Space and Aeronautical Sciences (ISAS). There were also well over two dozen sponsors and supporting organizations. The conference included 85 technical and 54 poster presentations, as well as six Pilot Project panel sessions. Other highlights included a welcoming reception hosted by the Aerospace Valley, a soiree hosted by the Office of the Mayor of Toulouse, a beautiful cocktail gala hosted by the Canadian Dept. of Foreign Affairs in the patio of the Hotel Novotel Cafarelli, and a CANEUS sponsored gala at the Château Launac.
