The 18 best architect firms invited to submit proposals for Sarasota Performing Arts Center

Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles was designed by architect Frank Gehry, whose firm is one of 18 invited to submit proposals for the new Sarasota Performing Arts Center.

The companies selected include Adjaye Associates, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Foster + Partners, Gehry Partners, Henning Larsen, Renzo Piano, Safdie Architects, Saana, Shigeru Ban, Snøhetta, Steven Holl Architects, Studio Gang and Zaha Hadid Architects.

The cost of the center was initially estimated to be between $300 million and $350 million but has been reduced in recent months to $275 million to $300 million.

Over the next few months, the panel will reduce the pool of firms to four to six finalists.

The new center is expected to replace the 52-year-old Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, which can no longer meet the needs of the growing population in the Sarasota area.
