| Atkins receives achievement award for flood resilience support Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, received an achievement award for work on the Truckee River Flood Management- Project. The award was presented at the 2018 Climate Change Business Achievement Awards event held March 20, 2019 in San Diego, California. SNC-Lavalin's Atkins business is providing engineering and economic analysis for the Truckee River Flood Management Authority's (TRFMA) Flood Management Project in Nevada. The initial design for the Vista Narrows portion of the project features river terracing, levees and floodwalls for the 2.4-mile section of the river. The Vista Narrows project, a major milestone for the overall Truckee River Flood Management project, received the award in the Project Merit category. The first phase of the project, Vista Narrows will ultimately influence the remaining design phases for the overall project. Using hydraulic modeling, the team determined the areas of inundation and flood depths for the Vista Narrows and downstream portions of the river. The design lowers flood water surface elevations in the area by enhancing constriction points, which prevents water from backing up and allows more flow to be conveyed downstream during large storm events. "Our goal was to support TRFMA and provide an innovative solution to keep construction costs down and minimize the levee and floodwall heights needed for other portions of the project, " said Brian Janes, Project Manager, SNC-Lavalin's Atkins business. "Working with TRFMA, we're efficiently and effectively helping create flood-resilient communities." The awards ceremony was part of Environmental Business International Inc.'s (EBI) annual Environmental Industry Summit XVII held in San Diego March 20-22, 2019. write your comments about the article :: © 2019 Construction News :: home page |
