| Fraunhofer Center and Pöyry collaborate on development of energy business model system The Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy and Pöyry's Management Consulting Business Group are collaborating on the development and application of an energy business model system. The model allows integrated multi-utilities to anticipate future scenarios, gain new perspectives in existing and future markets and identify appropriate actions to determine future strategic positioning. The objective of the collaboration between the two organizations is to develop model-based corporate strategies in disruptive energy markets. This will be done using an IT solution developed by a team of Fraunhofer experts and academics from the University of Leipzig. IRPsim (Integrated Resource Planning and Simulation for Integrated Utilities) is a techno-economic modelling software facilitating holistic analysis and valuation of integrated multi-utilities based on market fundamentals, market design and regulatory developments represented at detailed granularity (15 minute intervals). The model allows analysis and quantification of certain effects, consequences and interrelations within the energy sector that have not been synthesized to this level of detail before. It will be used to investigate the impacts of innovative technologies, concepts and business models on integrated multi-utilities companies, using structured, model-based scenario analysis. In risk assessment studies, it supports the examination of disruptive factors and their potential effects on specific business segments. "The model's capabilities put us in a position to provide recommendations and derive strategic actions to mitigate potential negative repercussions of innovations", explains Prof. Dr. Thomas Bruckner, Head of Division for Sustainability Management and Infrastructure Economics at the Fraunhofer Center in Leipzig. Matthias Laue, Director at Pöyry, describes the need for the model: "To succeed in the future, energy players need to drive innovation and take investment decisions at an ever quicker pace, often with significant uncertainty over the impact on their business. They must aim to develop sustainable relationships with existing and new customers under a range of different business models." Robert Schwarz, Principal and Innovation Manager at Pöyry, explains the strategic context of collaborating with economists and energy experts from the Fraunhofer Center in Leipzig: "Using this energy business model system in combination with Fraunhofer's innovative software solution we can support our customers in the energy sector in identifying strategic actions and options to withstand competitive pressure and decreasing profit margins in the long-term." Hendrik Kondziella, who heads the Unit for Energy Management and Energy Economy at the Fraunhofer Center for International Management and Knowledge Economy, explains the collaboration with Pöyry from his perspective: "Together with Pöyry we aim to identify further applications for the software. We intend to run the first pilot projects this year, applying and advancing the software directly with clients. By involving a partner with a long track record in the sector, we are reinforcing our ability to implement Fraunhofer's mission to carry out applied research and ensure the competitiveness of German and European companies."
