| Kier BAM jv agrees £203 million contract in final form for Hinkley Point C The Kier BAM joint venture, which formed to meet the needs of the new nuclear market, and was chosen to provide the enabling works for Hinkley Point C new nuclear power station, has agreed a £203 million (approximately €275 million) contract in final agreed form, in order to deliver the first phase of this key new nuclear project. Originally appointed in 2012, Kier BAM has worked closely with client EDF during the evolution of the project. This collaboration and partnering approach has led to the creation of a new revised and expanded enabling works remit, which uses the much improved NEC form of contract. The work includes substantial excavation of over 5.5 million cubic metres of material, large scale earthworks, complex terracing structures and the creation of an expansive road network. The programme has also been designed to enable other major contractors delivering other elements of the project, to be able to collocate and collaborate at certain milestones, in order to maintain momentum once works are underway. The new contract is estimated to create around 600 jobs in the area, including a significant amount of local employment, as well as strong opportunities for skills development and progression of an apprenticeship programme. Commenting on the signing, Sean Jeffery, Kier executive director, infrastructure and overseas said: 'We have worked closely with the new nuclear team at EDF Energy to respond to key challenges, so we are proud of the role that we have played in helping the project to reach this critical milestone. It is an exciting time; we are at the forefront of the nuclear renaissance for the energy sector, and Hinkley Point C will be a seminal project for the industry. Today marks a key step change in momentum, and now enables us to recruit industry talent and local expertise in order to resource according to meet our expanded brief.' Stephen Fox, Chief Executive BAM Nuttall, said: 'This is a significant milestone in the ultimate delivery of this scheme. We are proud to be associated with a project that will play a significant part in providing for the future energy needs of the United Kingdom.' Once completed the Hinkley Point C power station is set to generate around seven per cent of the UK's electricity, all of which will be low carbon, and enough to power over five million homes. write your comments about the article :: © 2015 Construction News :: home page |
