| Mabey Hire makes investment in new fleet of Heavy Goods Vehicles Construction industry leader Mabey Hire has commissioned a fleet of 13 Scania Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), in a £1.3 million spend that signals the company's largest ever investment in logistics. The new vehicles will substantially increase Mabey Hire's existing bank of HGVs, and is an unprecedented investment for the construction firm as it builds upon its fleet operations. Mabey Hire's new fleet will operate from ten locations across the country. The decision to increase the company's delivery provisions was primarily driven by its objective to provide improved service and flexibility for customer deliveries. The investment in Mabey Hire's transport division is accompanied by a recruitment push for new drivers, with a total of fourteen staff being required to man the HGVs, including two matting drivers and four trunk drivers. Six drivers will be taken from Mabey Hire's existing team alongside new recruits, and demonstrate an increased investment in staff alongside the logistics overhaul. Pat Etches has been with Mabey Hire since February 2005, and has progressed through the company from a yard operative, through licensed class 2 driver to his current role as a class 1 night trunking driver. Speaking on the company's investment and recruitment drive, Pat said: "It's an exciting time to be working for Mabey Hire, and a great opportunity for new drivers to join the team. It's really encouraging to see the company making such a large scale investment in infrastructure, and especially in the health and safety measures that are being installed on the new vehicles. As a driver, I'm looking forward to taking on new challenges as Mabey Hire continues to expand its national presence". Leading the team of new recruits and existing drivers is newly appointed transport manager, Stephen Tooby, who joins with over twenty years of experience from companies such as Wincanton and Tibbet and Britten. "This is an exciting move - the £1.3 million cost of the new fleet also incorporates a substantial investment in Mabey Hire's ongoing commitment to exemplary Health & Safety standards", says Stephen. "As part of this investment, we have some of the latest safety equipment on the vehicles, including cameras, side-scanning sensors and safety alarms to warn the driver of vulnerable road users. In addition, we are installing full fleet tracking to all thirty-nine of our vehicles, so that we can provide customers with accurate information including expected delivery times." Six of the vehicles are articulated lorries with seven trailers of differing sizes, allowing for smaller loads to be carried or for the vehicle to manoeuvre more easily when required. Two lorry-mounted crane vehicles, due on stream in September, will allow matting to be taken off the fleet quickly and easily.
