Genoa-Milan high speed high capacity railway line “Terzo Valico”

Breakthrough occurred on Monday, July 27 in the Campasso tunnel (total length 600 metres), the first of the new Genoa - Milan high speed high capacity railway line.

The event was attended by Giovanni Toti, President of the Liguria Region and Giacomo Giampedrone, the Councillor for Public Works, Infrastructures and Roads, who were received by Giovanni Costa, Head of Investments for the client "Rete Ferroviaria Italiana", by Daniele Scataglini, North Area Manager and Arturo Turi, Project Manager for Italferr, whose task is to supervise the works, and by Michele Longo and Ettore Pagani, respectively Chairman and Director of the Cociv Consortium.

The Cociv Consortium, the General Contractor led by Salini Impregilo, appointed to carry out the design and construction activities for the Terzo Valico project, completed the excavation of the Campasso tunnel, situated within the City of Genoa, a year after commencement of activity on the south side, in July 2014.

The Campasso Tunnel will connect the new high speed high capacity railway line, currently under construction, and the existing railway line "Succursale dei Giovi" (Genoa – Milan – Turin route). The rock material, typical of the geological conformation of the area, was excavated entirely using the traditional method. Situated in a highly urbanized area, the tunnel furthermore presented various challenges in consideration of the limited area between the surface and the tunnel, all of which were overcome and all subsequent activities were carried out according to schedule.

After completion of the Campasso Tunnel, the "Terzo Valico" works will continue towards the next Valico Tunnel that, excavated on more than one side along the entire line, after 27 km will connect Genoa with the Province of Alessandria, being a readjustment of the railway networks between Liguria, Piedmont and Milan. As of today, all the main construction sites are active, both on the Ligurian side, at Fegino, Polcevera and Cravasco, and in the Piedmontese side with the Castagnola, Voltaggio, Pozzo Radimero ad Arquata and Serravalle worksites. The works aimed at improving the road situation are also under way, and at the beginning of 2016 the City of Genoa will have its new Borzoli-Erzelli road, which will connect the Genoa Airport tollgate with the Borzoli District, thereby eliminating the transit of approximately 10,000 containers per month through the city centre.

The Campasso Tunnel is the first section of the "Terzo Valico", a major infrastructure and part of the Rhine-Alpine Corridor, one of the strategic corridors of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T core network), connecting Italy to other European regions, allowing the country to increase its economic competitiveness and to open out towards Northern markets.

At peak activity the project will create employment for a further 2,500 people in the next months and will have important repercussions on the industry and related services.
