| Five Flatiron projects earn Caltrans Partnering Excellence Awards Flatiron, one of the largest infrastructure contractors in North America, won five 2015 Excellence in Partnering Awards from the California Department of Transportation, including two gold awards, one silver award and two bronze awards. The Caltrans Excellence in Partnering Awards program recognizes teams who use partnering best practices to facilitate successful projects. In total, 14 projects were recognized this year that demonstrate the benefits of partnering to Caltrans, its partners and the public. The awards will be presented April 16 in Sacramento, Calif. The Arboleda Freeway Project in Merced, a joint venture of Teichert and Flatiron, earned a gold partnering award in the projects greater than $50 million category. Flatiron worked around the clock and used some innovative staging to complete the project ahead of schedule. The $13.5 million project replaces Interstate 520 bridge approach slabs with joint seal and concrete barrier end treatments on 56 bridges. Work took place on 6 different freeways in locations across San Diego County. Almost exclusively night work, the work was performed adjacent to live traffic under nightly lane closures. The Interstate 880 Median Upgrade project in Oakland earned a bronze partnering award in the projects under $10 million category. The $3.1 million project replaced a 3, 200 linear feet of existing median with a concrete barrier atop an at-grade deck spanning the northbound and southbound I-880 bridges running downtown Oakland.
