Pöyry study highlights challenges to forest plantations

In its latest 'Point of View' report, "Reinventing Plantation Forestry", Pöyry warns that a new wave of innovation is urgently needed to maintain the competitiveness of plantation forests.

The report explains why the forces that once made plantation forests competitive are weakening and identifies clear signals of a fundamental change affecting the cost competitiveness of plantation forests.

Despite four decades of increased productivity, the study identified a reduction of yield increase to just 1.5% per annum, half of what it used to be. Pöyry proposes a new wave of innovation, the invention and adoption of disruptive innovations coupled with excellence in operations management, to maintain future competitiveness of plantation forests.

"Companies need to identify opportunities to improve processes and forest management practices, " says João Cordeiro, Senior Principal at Poyry Management Consulting. "However, despite excellence in traditionally performed operations bringing cost savings without the burden of large investment, a new paradigm in planted forests will only be created by the promotion and adoption of disruptive technologies - entirely new ways of producing wood and managing plantations".

Examples of disruptive technologies beginning to emerge in the industry are highlighted in the report, but these require time to mature and significant investments in applied sciences, research and development. The study concludes that companies need to seek co-operation with technical experts, equipment suppliers, research institutes and universities in a wide range of topics - a truly challenging task - to ultimately leverage the interdisciplinary know-how for the benefit of the forest industry.
