| Bechtel to design and build a combined-cycle power plant in Virginia Bechtel announced that the company is part of a consortium awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction contract to build a natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle power plant in Loudoun County, Virginia. The Stonewall Energy Project, a 778-megawatt facility with advanced emissions-control technology, will be one of the cleanest and most efficient plants in the nation. This will be the fourth power plant the Bechtel-Siemens consortium has built for Panda Power Funds. "The Bechtel-Siemens consortium represents a highly experienced team that continues to provide value as we seek to deliver the Stonewall project to the community in Loudoun County, " said Todd Carter, president and senior partner of Panda Power Funds. "This is an advanced facility designed to be environmentally friendly while producing power for one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S." The generating station will use reclaimed municipal wastewater from the Town of Leesburg to cool the plant, conserving the Commonwealth's natural supply of drinking water. Further, the facility will be built along existing transmission lines, eliminating the need for additional power lines that would otherwise be required to import power from outside of Loudoun County. "The plant will produce enough power to support 778,000 homes and in doing so will increase the supply and reliability of power to the region. In addition, the project is expected to produce approximately 600 craft jobs and 30 long-term jobs post construction, " said Mary McLaughlin, president of Bechtel's thermal power business line. "We look forward to working with Panda, Siemens, and the community to deliver this important project." Bechtel will provide project management, engineering, procurement, construction, and startup services, while Siemens will provide the power-island package, including the natural gas and steam turbines, generators, and waste-heat-recovery boilers. The consortium built the Temple I and Sherman Power Projects, which were both completed ahead of schedule, and is currently building the Temple II Power Project—all in Texas. These projects are similar in size to the Stonewall Power Project and, when completed, all 4 plants will collectively generate enough electricity to power approximately 3 million homes.
