| Forensic Services and Coroner’s Complex captures AIA Award of Merit  Toronto's new Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex in Toronto has received an Award of Merit from the 2014 American Institute of Architects Justice Facility Review. Stantec Architecture, in association with MWL Architects, served as the Proponent Design Architects and Architects of Record on the project. WZMH Architects/SmithGroupJJR served as Planning, Design and Compliance Architects.The Award of Merit was presented November 6 at the AIA's Academy of Architecture for Justice National Conference in St. Louis, MO. The Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex (FSCC) is one of the largest of its kind in the world, housing a consolidated forensic laboratory, medicolegal autopsy services and coroner's courts. The building is the first redevelopment project on an underdeveloped provincial campus, which will also include a new health care facility. The FSCC building serves as a gateway to the campus from its eastern edge, establishing it as a new publically centered precinct. "The majority of the program required security and segregation, so our challenge was to leverage the small amount of public space to create a sense of urban connectivity and community, " says Michael Moxam, Project Principal with Stantec Architecture. "On the interior, we created a research community, organized by a central 'Forensic Commons'. The full height, light-filled space encourages collaboration and casual connection between researchers in a way not possible in the previous facilities." The AIA Jury praised the FSCC, noting: "This is a unique and attractive design response to a challenging owner program. It looks like a great place to work. Sustainable features include 40 per cent water reduction, 75 per cent waste diversion, 30 per cent local materials, 20 per cent recycled materials and 38 per cent energy savings." This award of merit is the fifth award Stantec Architecture has received from the AIA's Justice Facility Review Program for its' public safety work.
