Redesigning the traffic nerve centre of Tampere

In the biggest architect competition in Finland for many years, Ramboll is part of the winning team that has been picked to redesign the traffic nerve centre around the central station in Tampere.

The international design contest for the Travel and Service Centre area sought a vision that would allow for redevelopment that was functional and of a high quality in terms of the cityscape. The winning proposal, ReConnecting Tampere, presents an innovative vision of a railway station environment that caters to various forms of public transportation.

Easy access to new traffic network
The traffic arrangements in the area allow easy access by different modes of transport, and the new design offers an attractive cityscape of offices, services and residential buildings. Ramboll was in charge of traffic planning and calculation of property costs in the winning design team.

"In our proposal, the rail yard at the city centre will be covered and new urban space with plazas and buildings will be constructed on top of it. The new Travel and Service Centre will incorporate networks of different means of transportation, such as trains, buses, trams as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic, parallel to each other and also partly on different levels, " says Jouni Lehtomaa, Department Manager at Ramboll.

The team comprised Cobe Aps (Denmark), with architect Dan Stubbergaard as the principal designer, Ramboll Finland Ltd, with engineer Jouni Lehtomaa as the traffic planner, as well as Lunden Architecture Oy and Newsec Valuation Oy.

50 teams
Nearly 50 teams enrolled in the highly competitive contest. Five teams were selected to participate in the actual contest, four of which submitted their entries by the deadline. Ramboll experts participated in the entries of two different teams.

The international contest was organised by the City of Tampere, the Finnish Transport Agency, VR Group Ltd and Senate Properties. The Travel and Service Centre design contest sought a shared vision for the development of the area and guidelines for future measures.
