| FCC Industrial to build a liquefied natural gas storage tank in Finland FCC Industrial, the FCC Group company specializing in industrial projects, has won the contract to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank at Tahkoluoto Harbour at Pori, on the western coast of Finland. The client is Skangass (part of Gasum Group), the Nordic countries' leading LNG operator. The new terminal will have the storage capacity for 30,000 cubic metres of LNG and is scheduled to go into operation in the last quarter of 2016. More than 250 full-time jobs will be created during project execution, and when the job is finished around 10 people will work directly for the new terminal, while another 50 people will benefit from jobs created indirectly. FCC Industrial will handle the project under an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) agreement. That means FCC Industrial is responsible for doing the tank engineering and design work, purchasing materials and building and commissioning the tank and all the ancillary systems needed for the operation of the LNG terminal. The company is thoroughly experienced at building LNG tanks; in fact, it is one of Spain's leaders, having built seven LNG tanks at the harbours in Gijón, Barcelona and Cartagena. Facilities of this type are usually built in the industrial areas of harbours, which are strategic locations, logistically speaking, for transporting and distributing liquefied natural gas. Natural gas shipped in by methane tanker is stored in liquid form in storage plants because its volume in the liquid state is 600 times less than in the gaseous state. To maintain natural gas in its liquid form, tanks have to be kept at a temperature of 163 °C below zero. When the liquefied gas is taken out of the storage facility, it is turned back into gaseous form using a process called "regasification", so it can be injected into the gas pipeline system and piped to consumers. With this new contract, FCC Industrial has added yet another industrial project to its international list. The company is taking over 25 years' worth of experience building and starting up hydrocarbon transport facilities (oil pipelines and gas pipelines) and storage facilities in Spain, where it has built projects for clients like Enagas, Gas Natural Fenosa, CLH and Repsol, and exporting that expertise to clients abroad. write your comments about the article :: © 2014 Construction News :: home page |
