ABB to present leading-edge rail technologies at InnoTrans in Berlin

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will present several innovative technologies for rolling stock and infrastructure projects at the InnoTrans in Berlin, from September 23-26, 2014.

Rail is seen as an increasingly important means to ease the congestion and environmental impact of rising urban commuter demand. ABB will exhibit solutions that help train builders and network operators achieve their goals of safe, reliable, comfortable and cost-effective transit at this biennial trade fair for passenger and freight transport technology.

ABB will showcase for the first time its latest-generation roof-mounted traction transformer for regional trains which is extremely compact and lightweight, helping to conserve space and enhance efficiency. Other highlights on display include new compact converters for regional trains and an innovative turbocharger developed specifically for long-haul and heavy shunting applications.

Another highlight will be ENVILINETM ERS, ABB's wayside substation Energy Recuperation System which recovers vehicle energy generated during braking that is otherwise lost, and returns it to the local AC network, with potential to optimize energy usage by up to 20 percent. The system is now available in a new version for 1,500 V DC (volts/direct current).

In addition, ABB experts will provide a comprehensive program of technical presentations on these new innovations. This includes the benefits of wayside energy storage and how repowering with AC traction train solutions can offer a second life for locomotive fleets.

ABB has booked several major rail orders this year for both rolling stock and infrastructure. These include a $200 million contract to supply the power conversion and control systems for a retrofit and design upgrade for SJ's high-speed trains in Sweden, a large traction substations contract from Network Rail to upgrade one of Britain's oldest and busiest railways, and another for the supply of on-board traction technology for China's first rapid regional train.

ABB has a range of power and automation products and solutions for the rail industry and a vast global installed base. Increasing concern for the environment, rapid urbanization, the need to move more people and freight faster and volatile fuel prices make rail a strategic focus sector for the company.
