Ruukki delivering steel frame for new extension to terminal at Oslo Airport in Norway

Ruukki is delivering and installing the steel frame for a new extension at Oslo Airport in Norway. Ruukki's delivery for the new North Pier includes the steel frame, as well as design and structural steel fire protection. In terms of passenger numbers, Oslo Airport is the second largest airport in the Nordic countries.

Ruukki started installation work at the site in January 2014 and will continue until the end of 2014. The extension to the airport terminal will open in April 2017. The terminal has a surface area of around 29,000 m2. Once the extension has been completed, it is estimated Oslo Airport will have a capacity of 28 million passengers annually.

"Its long experience of total airport terminal deliveries was a key factor in the choice of Ruukki as our partner. Besides this, Ruukki enjoys a reputation as a reliable supplier. Top-quality products and an ability to keep to schedule were also decisive factors in choosing Ruukki as our partner, " explains Ruukki's customer, Terje Bjørgen, project development manager at Spenncon.

"Ruukki has similar experience from earlier airport projects in Finland, Sweden, Norway and the UK, for example. Airport projects are always demanding for timetable and safety reasons. Oslo Airport has almost a thousand departures a day and will continue operating as normal during extension work, " says Risto Hetemäki, project manager at Ruukki Building Systems.

"Prefabrication ensures the smooth flow of the installation process at the site. In addition, prefabricated products reduce the disruption in the vicinity of the construction site. When building extensions, it's important to ensure minimum disruption so that the building can continue to be used normally for its existing activities, " adds Hetemäki.

Ruukki is delivering a total of 1, 900 tonnes of steel for the Oslo Airport project. The beams for the steel frame will be made at Ruukki's plants in Ylivieska in Finland and Oborniki in Poland.
