| New solar thermal products for single-family homes Ruukki is to expand its solar thermal product family with two new systems utilising solar heat: a solar thermal package and a made-to-measure system. Both systems are based on heat collectors that can be installed on all types of roof irrespective of their incline. Ruukki will first launch the new products on the Finnish and Polish markets. Solar thermal systems are mainly based on heat collectors on the roof collecting heat from the sun's rays and transferring the heat to a hot water storage tank, from where the water can be used as domestic hot water or to heat the building. "Utilising the sun's thermal energy can cut heating costs, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve a building's energy performance. The future market value of a building also rises when it has been equipped to utilise renewable energy. New construction is the whole time striving for low-energy buildings and so all available energy sources must be utilised," explains Matti Perttula, Director, Roofing Products and Services at Ruukki. Ruukki's ready-to-use solar thermal packages include solar collector units for areas of three different sizes: 4, 6 and 8 square metres. A thermal solar package is mostly suitable to heat domestic hot water and can generally produce around half of a household's annual domestic hot water requirement. A made-to-measure system is suitable for detached, semi-detached and terraced houses, as well as apartment blocks that wish to use thermal energy to heat domestic hot water and to heat living space. The system is also ideal for single-family homes requiring a lot of hot water. After the initial outlay of the systems, energy is almost free of charge thanks to very low operating and maintenance costs. The products now being launched are a continuation of the Ruukki Classic solar thermal roof launched in spring 2013.
