Ruukki's steel beam system for IsoKristiina shopping centre

The IsoKristiina Shopping Centre in Lappeenranta, Finland is currently undergoing renovation and expansion. Ruukki is involved in building the extension to the shopping centre. When completed, the extension will be home not only to commercial premises, offices and parking facilities, but also to Lappeenranta City Theatre. The five-storey extension will have a total surface area of 37,400 square metres and the lead contractor is Skanska Talonrakennus Oy. Ruukki's part in the project is worth EUR 3 million and includes delivery and installation of the steel frame and installation of the precast envelope slabs.

Ruukki's installation work began in January and will end in June. A total of 1,360 tonnes of steel will be used in the shopping centre extension. The steel frame consists of WQ beams and truss structures. Ruukki's beam structure can be used in all multi-storey construction projects and its use considerably shortens project construction time. The WQ beams are being made in Ruukki's plant in Oborniki, Poland and the WQ trusses at Ruukki's production facilities in Peräseinäjoki, Finland.

"Ruukki's design and construction schedule convinced us at the tender stage and we based our own schedule on Ruukki's construction schedule," says Kari Hovi, director, eastern regional unit, at Skanska Talonrakennus.

"The location of the extension to the shopping centre in the middle of existing buildings in itself posed a challenge to project design. Our suggestion of using prefabricated structures where the concrete slabs are installed in pace with installation of the steel frame considerably shortens construction time, says Tommi Matomäki, EVP, Ruukki Building Systems.

The renovated and enlarged IsoKristiina shopping centre will open to the public in 2015.
