Strabag building McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport

The publicly listed European construction group Strabag SE is building a designer outlet centre near Vancouver International Airport (YVR), Canada, for Vancouver Airport Authority and McArthurGlen, Europe's leading owner, developer and manager of designer outlets. McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport foresees the construction of more than 65,000 m² (35,000 m² gross leaseable area) in a prime location on YVR land for more than CAD 100 million (~ € 70 million).

"Thanks to several large infrastructure projects, for example in tunnelling, we are already very familiar with the local, Canadian market. Furthermore, it is a tradition for us to follow our clients to various different countries all over the world, " says Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag SE.

Joan Jove, McArthurGlen's Development Director for North America, says: "We are delighted to announce Strabag as the general contractor for McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport. Strabag has excelled around the world in building some of the most intricate and innovative projects – with a reputation for on-time and within-budget work."

"We are pleased to utilize the expertise of Strabag, which has a strong reputation for its work on international construction projects, including similar luxury designer centres in Europe, " said Tony Gugliotta, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Vancouver Airport Authority. "This is an exciting project that reinforces Vancouver International Airport's role in the economic development of British Columbia and Canada – construction alone will create 200 new local jobs, with 1,000 new jobs in place when the centre completes in 2015."

McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Neumünster near Hamburg, in Germany, which has been successfully finalised and handed over to the client last year, serves as a reference project. Works have now begun on the first phase of the project, which comprises the construction of a total area of around 42,000 m² (22,500 m² gross leasable area). McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport is scheduled to open in spring 2015. Phase two will involve the construction of a further approximately 23,000 m² (12,500 m² gross leasable area) of area.
