Pöyry extensively involved in designing the Helsinki City Rail Loop

Pöyry has received several assignments concerning the engineering of the Helsinki City Rail Loop. The Helsinki City Rail Loop is a commuter rail loop planned to be built underneath the centre of Helsinki.

Pöyry will perform bedrock surveys on the Loop within a consortium on the eastern, Hakaniemi side. Pöyry is also responsible for rock construction and geological planning in the Töölö area.

In June, Pöyry won the design competition for the Vauhtitie underpass bridge and its surroundings, to design the bridge, the opening of the nearby railway tunnel, and the road arrangements of the Vauhtitie area. Pöyry's proposal, "Chicaner", was the unanimous choice of the jury, and it also won the public vote. As a result, Pöyry was assigned the comprehensive design of the Vauhtitie area. In addition to designing the bridge, the assignment includes designing the road, environment, geological and water maintenance, and traffic.

Pöyry's water maintenance network designers will design the pipe and cable transfers required by the City Rail Loop. Pöyry architects are also involved in the design of the Hakaniemi station and its road tunnels.

The Helsinki City Rail Loop is a widely challenging project as it is designed in an urban built environment. Pöyry has the experience and capabilities to carry out all assignments.

All design in the City Rail Loop project is based on information modelling. The designing implemented now will act as the basis for the Parliament's future decision on implementing the project.

Pöyry is also responsible for the City Rail Loop's risk management expert service in the track and construction engineering phases. Risk management improves project safety by anticipating the project's hazards and risks related to designing, construction, introduction and use.

The total value of the above assignments is EUR 4.7 million. The order was recognised in the Regional Operations business stock in Q4.

The Helsinki City Loop is a project (currently at the planning stage) run by the Finnish Transport Agency and the City of Helsinki. The loop-shaped track will serve the local traffic in the capital region. It is designed to travel from Pasila through a tunnel underneath Töölö, Helsinki city centre and Hakaniemi, returning to Pasila. The Loop will help make the entire rail system of Finland run more smoothly.

The Finnish Parliament will make the final decision on building the City Rail Loop. After the decision, more detailed planning will commence. If the decision is made in 2014, the excavation of railway tunnels and stations can commence in the city centre in 2015 or 2016. The estimated total cost of the project is €740 million.
