| Arcadis and KNHM 125 years: Team Traffic Jam wins student Challenge On Wednesday evening Nov. 20th, Team Traffic Jam won the main prize of 10,000 euros in the student competition, The Challenge. The prize was presented during the anniversary celebration of Arcadis and KNHM, which was held in the Concertgebouw (also 125 years old) in Amsterdam, in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix. Real cases The competition was organised to mark the 125-year anniversary of engineering and consultancy organisation Arcadis and the non-profit organisation KNHM. Earlier this year, nine student teams went to work on some tough and topical challenges. The themes they tackled were: Healthy Planet, Urban Deltas and Connections. They worked on actual issues that organisations are confronting today. Winning idea Team Traffic Jam consists of six students from various universities, and they took part in the third Challenge on Connections. The team devised a means for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment to use the personal information of individual travellers to reduce the number of traffic jams. The Traffic Performance Ladder gives organisations insight into how their employees contribute to the formation of traffic queues. The fewer the kilometres in the queue, the higher the (financial) reward for the organisation and the individual motorists. Other finalists Finalist Team Hellouw took part in the first Challenge on Healthy Planet. They devised an organisational structure for a village biomass digester for the Hellouw Biomass Foundation. With a cycle route along the biomass suppliers, the biomass digester and the users of energy, local residents and tourists become involved in every part of the energy production. Team New York took part in the second Challenge on Urban Deltas. They considered the problem of how the American company Verizon could protect its data centre in downtown New York against flooding. The team devised a number of innovative short- and long-term solutions, such as portable generators and a temporary dam wall. The Challenge In this anniversary year, Arcadis and KNHM are bringing together today's experts and tomorrow's talent, as well as colleagues and business partners, under the maxim Creating Tomorrow. The aim is to contribute innovatively to improvements in the quality of our immediate living and working environment. The student competition The Challenge was one of the initiatives in this context.
