Thorn equips Wm Morrisons stores with innovative LED lighting

Thorn, a Zumtobel Group brand, is equipping national retailer Wm Morrisons stores with LED lighting. Morrisons commissioned Thorn to convert 56 of its UK stores to the new lighting technology – and Thorn has already supplied a total of 25,000 luminaires for this project, a major order in the retail sector. The efficient LED lighting will bring the retail group energy savings of up to 70 percent and will cut CO2 emissions by an annual 195 tonnes per store – based on measurements of the first trial store. Compared to the previous conventional lighting, the new lighting solution will enable cost savings of almost €40,000 per year and store, which equates to a payback period of 2.6 years.

Bespoke luminaires with Tridonic control gear
This lighting solution was developed specifically for Wm Morrisons and manufactured at the Thorn plant in Spennymoor, England. The aim was to mount the new LED luminaires in the existing system, replacing the previous fluorescent lamps. Tridonic, the lighting components brand within the Zumtobel Group, also contributed its expertise and supplied the control gear for the Thorn luminaires, enabling them to operate at maximum efficiency. As the customised luminaires were developed, the focus was on ensuring high quality lighting, which is particularly crucial in the retail sector.
