Crucial to consider water at early stage

The international sustainability conference Rebuild21, which is going on in Copenhagen on 22-23 May zooms in on water's influence on sustainable urban development. The theme of this year's conference is "New Nordic Growth" and the participants will mainly discuss how Nordic solutions can make the world more sustainable.

Urban water represents global challenges and opportunities

One of the main sustainability challenges across the world is water management, especially in urban areas. The Nordic countries have a lot to offer when it comes to water in cities according to Herbert Dreisetl. He is one of the world's leading experts in urban development and founder of Atelier Dreisetl, which recently became part of Ramboll.

"There is a great export potential in the knowhow that the Nordic countries have developed within water. But to make a difference in large, urban development projects in countries such as for example India, it is about much more than just presenting strong technical skills within waste water management and local management of rainwater, " says Herbert Dreisetl and adds:

"It is all about becoming part of the development projects as early as possible, preferably at the political level too. Here you have to make an effort to include water at the early stages of projects. This is absolutely crucial in order to make water part of projects in the most cost-efficient and sustainable way."

A united industry

Herbert Dreiseitl is the first speaker at the Rebuild21 conference, and other water experts from Ramboll contribute with presentations too. One of these is international water director Søren Hvilshøj, who stresses that the Danish water sector already is heavily involved in the global market for water-related solutions.

"As a united sector we are in a good position to turn water into the new wind. Lately we have united as an industry of its own, and this is why I look at our unified opportunities for contributing to sustainable and cost-efficient water solutions on the global market with optimism, " Søren Hvilshøj says.

Expert papers on tomorrow's water solutions

In Denmark, the network organisation Rethink Water is one of the key representatives for the Danish water sector's agenda on the international scene. During 2013, Rethink Water will publish a number of white papers with Danish water experts' views on the challenges and solutions in the future. Ramboll is one of the companies that has contributed to the white papers.
