Atkins’ GIS expertise helping local Danish governments in efficiency drive

Design and engineering firm Atkins is using its expertise in complex geographic information systems (GIS) to help local authorities in Denmark create a user-friendly web-based system for professionals and the general public to apply for construction and environmental permits. The new system has been set up to respond to a countrywide call by the Danish Government to drive 80 per cent of any communications with the public onto digital platforms in a bid to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Called Build and Environment, the easy-to-access online self service system will cover 350 types of building projects including listed buildings and seven types of environmental cases. Atkins' GIS experts incorporated maps into the programme with integrated drawing tools which enables users to insert an address or benefit from a search facility to locate the appropriate piece of land. The drawing tools will allow users to sketch the project and reveal any restrictions on the specific location that may prohibit a permit, for example environmental protection areas. The map will help users see that by moving the location of the project slightly, it will avoid such restrictions.

Atkins is working as a sub consultant to Schultz, the IT supplier for Kombit which is the company set up by the local government authorities to provide their IT solutions. The system will go live to the public during 2014.

Other self service solutions that Atkins' GIS experts in Denmark have worked on include the development of the Danish Agricultural Ministry's web based self service system to handle Danish farmers' applications to the EU for agricultural subsidies.
