| Astrada awarded further contract on Rosshäusern-Mauss double-track upgrade project BLS AG has awarded Astrada AG, a member of the Strabag Group, another construction section on the Bern-Neuchâtel railway line. The line not only connects the two canton capitals but also forms part of the international Bern-Paris link and of the Bernese commuter rail system (S-Bahn Bern). Owner BLS AG intends to upgrade the largely single-track line to double track in stages. The section between Rosshäusern and Mauss will be upgraded from 2012 to 2018. At the heart of the project is the construction of the new 2 km Rosshäusern Tunnel. Astrada AG already executed Section 3 from March through August 2012. This section comprised the construction of the installation spaces and access roads as well as the school route safety measures for the entire project. In a period of just 5 months, a total of 250,000 m³ of soil and gravel were excavated and refilled, 3 km of access roads built, utility lines re-routed and existing roads adapted. The new section, Section 5, comprises the construction of track from the west portal of the Rosshäusern Tunnel up to around 300 m before the Saane Viaduct. The 1,030 m run along the existing track of the Bern-Paris TGV line. The CHF 7.1 million contract also includes earthworks, drainage pipes, concrete works, excavation bracing and piles. The execution of the project is divided into various construction phases and will last from October 2012 to March 2015. To ensure continued rail service, the construction works can only be carried out in interrupted intervals. Works which for safety reasons cannot be carried out under rail operation will be performed at night. Some of the works will be performed in a protected landscape. BLS plans to begin operating the new double-track line at the end of 2016. Photo: BLS write your comments about the article :: © 2012 Construction News :: home page |
