| Migration Solutions lights the way with an EU GreenLight Award The EU GreenLight Awards have been won in the past by global organisations and even cities. Now, in 2012, a UK based data centre company has won an award for the first time. Not only is this the first data centre ever to be recognised in this way, but it is also the only UK company to have won an award. Launched by the European Union in 2000, the EU GreenLight programme promotes the reduction of energy consumption by public and private organisations on a voluntary basis. GreenLight which promotes highly efficient lighting currently has 710 partners who collectively achieved total energy savings of 304,000 MWh in 2011. Migration Solutions, in its state-of-the-art data centre in Norwich, Sentry42, took the decision to replace all of the conventional fluorescent lighting in the data centre, along with all other internal and external lighting, with LED. This involved the replacement of 400 indoor luminaires and 100 external halogen lights. Changing the lighting to ensure that it was PIR controlled and only used when necessary, significantly reduced the time the lighting was used. The reduction in time, combined with the LED installation resulted in a saving of over 732 MWh per year and a reduced running cost of around 95%. The EU GreenLight programme requires annual reporting on savings made through lighting installations and winners of the award are selected by a jury consisting of industry experts. Migration Solutions are the first UK company to have won an EU GreenLight award and also the first data centre. David Manning, Operations Director at Migration Solutions, who received the award in Frankfurt am Main, on Wednesday 18th April 2012, on behalf of Migration Solutions, said, "We are delighted to have been selected for this award as it demonstrates our continued commitment to the environment and, particularly, that our data centres are designed to be as environmentally efficient as is possible." Previous winners of the award have included major international corporations and European cities. For Migration Solutions to have been selected is a high accolade and highly prestigious. "We are honoured and delighted to have been selected for this award", said Alex Rabbetts, Managing Director at Migration Solutions, "We have been talking about improving the environmental efficiency of data centres for a number of years and this proves to both our peers and to our customers that we are prepared to invest where we can to improve the efficiency of our own data centre." write your comments about the article :: © 2012 Construction News :: home page |
