Züblin awarded large contract for Stuttgart

Ed. Züblin AG was awarded the contract for the new underground station in Stuttgart (Section 1.1) of Deutsche Bahn's Stuttgart 21 rail project. The order encompasses the construction of the station concourse, of the access tunnels at the south and north ends of the station using the cut-and-cover method and of the Hauptsammler West, Cannstatter Straße and Nesenbach culverts. The order has a net value of about € 300 million.

Stuttgart 21 will rotate the existing terminal station by 90 degrees and transform it into a through station with eight tracks on four island platforms 420 metres in length. The new tracks will be lowered by around eleven metres relative to the current track level. A ring system will link the station in all directions to the regional and national railway network, with four access tracks at each side of the station. This will allow significantly more trains to enter and exit the station than before and will guarantee fast and comfortable rail connections both regionally and nationally.

The design for the new Stuttgart Central Station was conceived by Düsseldorf-based architects ingenhoven architects. The historic station building by architect Paul Bonatz, with its landmark reception building, station tower and arcades, will be preserved as an entrance hall for the new station. The new station's main features will be large skylights to give the underground concourse a bright and comfortable atmosphere. Being built directly above the concourse itself is the clearly outlined Straßburger Platz square, which will be integrated into the park of the Palace Gardens. The square will link Kurt-Georg-Kiesinger-Platz square with the Palace Gardens on one side and the Bonatz station with the new neighbourhood being built in place of the above-ground tracks on the other side.
