Flatiron projects named Top Projects in Alberta, Canada

Two Flatiron projects have been recognized as 2011 Top Projects by Alberta Construction Magazine. Flatiron's Northwest Anthony Henday Drive project in Edmonton took home the top honor in the civil construction category, and the Athabasca River Bridge project in Fort McMurray was named a runner up in the same category.

Northwest Anthony Henday Drive is a new 21-kilometer (13-mile) section of highway with nine interchanges, four flyovers and two crossings over railways. Some crossings have multiple structures, bringing the total number of bridges to 29. Since its opening on Nov. 1, Flatiron's Northwest Anthony Henday Drive project has dramatically improved traffic flow around the city of Edmonton. The C$995 million job for the Government of Alberta Ministry of Transportation enables drivers to skirt the northwest edge of the city, avoiding Edmonton's busy side streets with many stoplights. This is the third portion of the ring road to be commissioned by the Alberta government.

The new Athabasca River Bridge on Highway 63 has five lanes and a 472-meter-long bridge deck that is the largest in Alberta. Flatiron engineers used a unique method to incrementally launch and position the bridge's steel girders, which are some of the heaviest ever used. The stout structure was built to accommodate more than three times the average weight of most bridges, with a capacity of 1,100-metric-ton loads. The C$138 million project was completed in June 2011.
