Bilfinger Berger brings Sonnenstein Castle into the 21st century

German builder Bilfinger Berger has concluded a two-year design and construction phase with the official opening Sonnenstein Castle. The Company is now entering into a 25-year operational phase. The new administrative headquarters of the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district in Pirna is the first heritage building project realized as a public private partnership (PPP). The investment volume amounts to €45 million. After approximately 20 years of vacancy and deterioration, the district succeeded in converting the historic castle into a modern, energy-efficient administrative complex with the help of a PPP model. The district can also expect cost advantages of about ten percent.

With Sonnenstein Castle, it was possible to successfully combine the demands of protected heritage buildings with those of energy-efficient properties. The building is equipped with state-of-the-art heating, air-conditioning and lighting technology with intelligent control systems. The use of room-in-room concepts ensures that basement levels meet the demands of modern applications. This solution chosen provides permanent protection against moisture without the need to interfere with the historic substance of the building. The project received the "PPP innovation award" from the Bundesverband PPP (Federal PPP Association) for its well-balanced concept.
